Stay Cosy: the Best Electric Blankets and Heated Throws

Writer's picture: Christopher WhiteChristopher White

Proving that you can both beat the energy bill blues and stay cosy whilst you chill this winter.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: who in the UK can actually afford to put the heating on this winter?

New analysis from Citizens Advice shows 1 in 4 (24%) people in the UK simply won’t be able to afford to pay their energy bills in October based on current forecasts. This is double the number already financially suffering ahead of the price cap rise.

The winter heating contribution from the government has come as a small help, but with energy bills just getting higher and higher, it’s no wonder that many of us are turning to other methods to try and stay warm this winter without breaking the bank.

Electric blankets & heated throws: a revelation!

One of those ingenious ways in which the UK public are staying warm is by using electric blankets and heated throws.

Back when I was growing up, electric blankets meant two things to me: they were something mysterious that my parents had somewhere underneath them (I had no idea why grown-ups would need such things); and second, they had the reputation (along with those dual washer / tumble dryers) of periodically bursting into flames in houses around the UK. It was the 80s though, when safety standards weren't what they are today. So I suppose it’s no surprise that it took me until the age of 40 to really start considering buying an electric blanket for myself.

And you know what? It’s been life-changing! This is not hyperbole: gone are the days of having to psych myself up to get into bed like it's the ice bucket challenge or something. It’s actually magical.

So what better way to pass on the wave of hot enthusiasm currently rolling through our household than to give you a list of the best electric blankets and heated throws, as reviewed by Amazon UK customers!

The best electric blankets and heated throws as reviewed by Amazon UK customers

#1. Navaris Plush Electric Blanket: grey blue

Cost: £58.99

This Navaris electric blanket comes in a gorgeous grey and blue combination, and the plush polyester is going to feel amazingly soft... which is probably why it's the number 1 customer reviewed electric throw on Amazon UK right now! It also costs just 2p per hour to run - a massive bonus for your wallet.

Key info:

  • Super snuggly: Snuggling up with a cosy blanket and a cup of tea is a soothing escape from chilly weather, but you may need a little extra warmth on the frostiest days. The Navaris Electric Blanket will provide comfort during those winter months.

  • Full body warmth: after you plug in the blanket, use the remote control to switch the heating level up to 3 different settings: Low, Medium, High. Even when the heat isn't turned on, the luxurious, velvety soft blanket is sure to keep you warm.

  • Deluxe double size: measuring 180 x 130 cm, this extra large heated overblanket will keep you and your partner warmer the entire night in the autumn and winter months. It's better to cuddle in pairs anyway!

  • Safety features: this blanket comes with overheat protection and a timer that makes it shut off after 3 hours, so you can rest easy at night without worrying about fires or burns.

  • Machine washable: the controller and cord are detachable so that you can machine wash the fleece blanket at 30°C. Choose the hand wash programme on your washing machine.

Happy customer Pshopper says it's been life-changing for her elderly mother: "I bought this heated throw for my elderly mother who feels the cold. She has already used it in the evenings whilst watching the tv. She says it’s warm, cosy and that she feels very relaxed whilst using it. It’s also cheap to run at 2p per hour, and that’s a huge bonus. It may enable her to turn down her thermostat a couple of notches without feeling the chill. I would highly recommend this heated throw and quite a few of my Mothers friends have purchased it, off the back of our recommendation. Pretty soft colour as well."

#2. Dreamcatcher Fitted Electric Blanket

Cost: £54.99

Coming in at number 2 on Amazon customers' favourite electric blankets is this Dreamcatcher fitted electric blanket. At a relatively affordable £55, it won't break the bank, and if you're in a relationship where you need different temperatures, the dual settings are ideal, allowing you to have each side at the right level of heat.

Key info:

M Robertson says it’s literally the 'best electric blanket ever': "this is fab so far - can't comment on durability yet but it more than fits my single bed with plenty of 'skirt' to tuck in. So much better than the 'cord' style blankets. Heats the bed beautifully. Easy control. Highly recommend."

#3. Homefront Electric Double Fitted Blanket

Cost: £67.95

With an average rating of 4.6 out of 5 on Amazon, another dual-control electric blanket completes the top three spots on this list of best electric blankets and heated throws.

This one's all about simplicity and comfort, and like the Dreamcatcher it offers separate controls for each side, so you can have your side on all night, even if your SO doesn't want theirs on. An extra feature that we like with the Homefront electric blanket is that it uses 'extra foot warmth technology' to help keep your feet warm - great if you have poor circulation, or experience arthritis.

Key info:

Satisfied Amazon customer Irene says: "So pleased with this purchase. Far superior to the more expensive electric blankets I have purchased in the past. Heats up very quickly, simple controls to use and fits so easily over the bed, does not move about. Highly recommended. Would certainly purchase again."

#4. GlamHaus Heated Throw

Cost: £59.99

We're not sure how you feel about this one, but just looking at this makes us want to plug it in, climb inside and forget about the world for a bit. It looks super soft, comes in a stylish neutral grey and white, and with an average rating of 4.6 out of 5, is the 4th top customer favourite in our list of best electric blankets and throws.

Ok, it might be a little pricier than some on this list, but it certainly hits the sweet spot with its combination of style and functionality.

Key info:

  • Luxury: The Glamhaus Luxury Heated Reversible Fleece Throw is the perfect way to keep cosy in those chilly evenings. Use it on your bed as an over blanket or snuggle up on the sofa and wrap yourself with the luxury fleece on one side or choose the velvety soft fabric on the other

Proud GlamHaus throw owner Piper-wiper says: "What not to like! It's good value for money and snuggly warm and cost effective in these difficult times of rising cost of living. Highly recommend."

#5. Bauer Professional Luxury Soft Touch Heated Throw

Cost: £59.99

You don't have to agree, but - this pink is everything! It does come in other colours too, if pink's not your thing, or if you suffer from any toxic masculinity issues causing you to dislike it.

Again, a super soft, luxurious electric blanket which you can also use as a throw, with a whopping ten heat settings (as if you really need that many - but cool), and the ability to set a timer. It claims to cost around 5p per hour to use, based on the winter 2022 energy prices, but that's hardly going to break the bank when your daily standing charge on electricity is many times that.

Key info:

  • Soft touch electric blanket: his luxury pink coloured deluxe heated blanket is the perfect companion to keep you all warm and cosy on the sofa or in bed on those cold winter nights. It has a running cost of only 5p per hour, calculated using the UK: Price Cap rate of 28 pence per kWh (April 2022) and a GSM of 1560.

  • 10 heat settings: this 135cm x 190cm soft touch heated throw features 10 separate heating levels, allowing you to set the perfect temperature to customise your experience to your specific needs. This electric blanket is the perfect size to fit a king size bed.

  • Timer functionality: this heated blanket comes with a timer functionality that allows you to set the heat on for between 1-9 hours, and features an energy efficient auto-off timer that will turn off if the temperature gets too high.

  • Detachable digital controller: this features the option to remove the digital controller, allowing you to use it as a plain throw for the sofa or bedspread in the summertime. This also makes the throw machine washable to keep it smelling fresh and feeling extra cosy.

Tia Jones says that she's had a great time with hers: "this was recommended to me by a friend to help keep thermostat lower this winter. Arrived few days ago and already become invaluable. Lovely to snuggle into whilst watching TV and, an hour before bed, I lay it over the duvet and it warms the bed beautifully. Simple to use, nothing to do but plug it in, sit back and relax. Definitely recommend."

#6. Sinocare Heat Pad

Cost: £29.99

You may be thinking, 'hmm, this looks like a really tiny electric blanket' - and you'd be right! Sort of. It comes in at number 6 on the best electric blankets and heated throws, so we thought it had earned its rightful place here.

You'd obviously struggle to heat an entire bed with the Sinocare heat pad, but it's great for all those times when you're not in your bed, whether it's sitting at your desk all day, or in front of the TV. And it's small enough to make it easy to move it around, depending on where you need your heat.

Key info:

  • Full body relief: the electric heating pad extra-large 12” x 24” is perfect for pain relief of your back, shoulders, abdomen, legs, and arms, and provides pleasant muscle relaxation.

  • Manage your heat: the heating pad provides a low, medium, or high-temperature mode for you to choose according to your needs. Easy to operate digital LED controller lets you switch between 6 personalized heat settings.

  • Dry and moist therapy: the heat pad can be used for moist heat therapy. Moist heat therapy provides deep penetrating for more effective relief. Just spray a fine mist on the pad surface, then you can enjoy a high level of relaxing.

  • Skin friendly and machine washable: heat pad for pain relief is made of coral fleece, feels smooth and soft, provides maximum comfort for your body. Detach the controller to make it machine washable.

  • Easy to use: plenty of coverage king size XL pad to cover larger areas that need relief, including spine, legs, and across the shoulders; XL heating pads with 4 timing settings ensure your safety.

Ekaterina Kazak actually uses it for something else...what a rebel! She says: "I know this isn't what the mat is supposed to be used for, but I specifically bought it because it was small washable and would fit on my desk. I've been working from home and my fingers are constantly freezing - the right hand especially, because it's constantly on the mouse. When it's okayish I keep the mouse pad on top of the heating pad and the keyboard too, so my wrists are always warm. When it gets really cold I put my mouse pad and mouse under the heating mat (see attached photos) and that doesn't restrict movement much and also keeps me warm. If I'm watching a film or YouTube I can always pull it into my lap and keep my hands on top of it or under it. For me this is a serious workplace upgrade. Setting three is warm, setting 6 is hot, haven't had any problems with the device as of yet, if something happens I'll update the review."

Rest assured, readers - we'll keep regularly checking back to see whether Ekaterina really does mean what she says.

#7. Coriwell Electric Heated Throw

Cost: £62.99

This is where product marketing photography really works wonders on your brain - doesn't this look comfortable?! Another deluxe heated throw pitched at around the £60 mark, the Coriwell is soft, stylish and most importantly, loved on Amazon. Like the similarly-priced Bauer, it comes with 10 heat settings and a timer, so you can decide how long you want it to stay on before you inevitably fall into a deep, electric throw-related sleep.

Key info:

  • 10 heat settings & 10 hour timer: 10 heating levels so that users can set the desired temperature according to their preferences. It's also equipped with a 1 to 10 hour programmable timer and 3 hour auto off functions. It is safe and energy-saving: perfect for when you fall asleep or if you forget to unplug your heated throw.

  • Soft & comfortable: made soft and skin-friendly flannel. Measuring 160 x 120 cm, this extra large heated overblanket will keep you warm for deep sleep on the sofa, settee or in bed and on freezing cold winter nights.

  • Warm: its many heating wires heat up quickly and distribute warmth evenly.

  • Long power cord: equipped with a 1.85-meter-long power cord and 0.93-meter-long control line, it provides more free space for use.

  • Safety features: comes with a Safety Overheat Protection allowing you to use your electric throw throughout the night with peace of mind. Fully CE compliant with UK & European regulations.

  • Machine washable: can be washed by hand or machine with 30°C water - just detach the controller before wash.

Happy Coriwell heated throw user Jennie Smith absolutely loves hers: "Warms up lovely, large enough to wrap around you whilst sat at the computer all day when home working without having to keep putting the heating up higher and higher. Absolutely love it!"

#8. Navaris Plush Electric Blanket: grey & white

Cost: £56.99

If this looks familiar, that's because it is - you saw a slightly different version at number 1 on this list. Whilst this comes in a dark grey with white, it's essentially the same great product, which is a super luxurious electric blanket, and you can also use it as a throw.

Nathalie says: "This is my dog’s favourite summer (heating off) and winter (heating on) and I join her on the sofa. It is easy to wash, easy to regulate and switches off automatically. Grey is nice and the off-white side is nice and fluffy."

If you want to know what it's like for humans, Anthony adds: "Purchased for my wife, she loves it and uses it every day." Woof!

#9. VonHaus Electric Blanket

Cost: £59.99

The woman on the photo looks like she's really enjoying hers - perhaps you might feel the same. But seriously, another £60-ish electric blanket with a range of heat controls and dual controllers to allow each person in the bed to regulate their own heat - it sounds great.

And when it comes to brand names for electricals, we're always reassured by anything that sounds reliably German, so why not read what Ke Shephard says about theirs below and see whether might also be swayed.

Key info:

  • 3 heat settings & dual controllers: with 3 heat settings and dual controllers, with this heated blanket you can find the perfect temperature for a great night’s sleep.

  • Secure ties: preventing any movement or creasing, secure the under blanket with corner ties.

  • Easily washed: simply detach the plugs for easy machine washing.

  • Safety features: complete with automatic shut-off to protect you and your home against overheating.

  • Dimensions: 190cm x 135cm

Ke Shephard says that she took a punt on a brand they'd never heard of: "I bought this blanket to replace a 20-year-old Dreamland. I’d not heard of VonHaus, but I liked the reviews, and it was a reasonable price. I’ve been using it for a few days and love it already! It fits well over my mattress, stays put, and heats up well. Very pleased so far!"

#10. Cozy Night Fleece Electric Blanket

Cost: £74.99

Just one look at the lovely fleecey covering on this electric blanket makes us yearn to rip the packaging off and stick it on the mattress. It's a little more expensive than other makes on this list, but a difference of £10-15 wouldn't stop most from exploring a product if it's going to make all the difference.

It's only a small touch, but they throw in (see what we did there) a zip bag for you to store this in over the warmer months when not in use - very thoughtful.

Key info:

  • Cozy luxury: this thick and fleecy King Size Dual Control Electric Blanket has been designed lovingly with a super comforting faux fleece finish adding that extra layer of warmth for those who struggle to stay warm on cold winter nights. Memory foam compatible, machine washable, and overheat protection for your peace of mind.

  • Simplicity: the choice of three heat settings, allowing you to find the perfect one for you. This makes them the perfect all-year-round electric blanket, as you can adjust the temperature to suit your needs and with a low wattage of only 60W per control costings only approx 1.3 pence per hour to run you can be sure of great savings whilst doing your bit for the environment.

  • Easy fit: unlike some retailers, our electric blankets are designed and measured to fit the whole surface of the top of the mattress and then simply just pull the strap over the sides of each corner, fits in seconds with no lifting. Fits all kinds of mattresses and is affordable enough to place one on every bed in your home to keep all of your family (and guests!) warm, all winter long!

  • Extras: supplied with a handy zip-up storage bag for out of season use, simply unplug your blanket carefully fold and store it in the handy storage bag when not needed in the hot summer months. Wash your Cozy Night fleece electric blanket in the washing machine with ease. Simply detach the controller and simply follow the washing instructions to make your blanket as good as new – leaving it fresh and clean, ready to be used again.

Lorraine Harrison says it’s a great fit, and cosy: This is the best electric blanket I've ever had. Fits perfect on my king size bed, almost edge to edge. The corner straps are a great idea, a lot easier than having to try to put them under the mattress then tie them. Doesn't take very long to heat up and the fleece is so cosy. Always had the other type in the past where you can feel the wires. This is certainly an improvement and would definitely recommend.

#11. Navaris Plush Electric Blanket: Christmas design

Cost: £58.99

We won't bore you with the key info again, as this is actually the THIRD variation of the same Navaris electric blanket on this list - but this time with an attractive festive twist.

It doesn't look overly Christmassy though, so unless you're a hardcore '12 days of Christmas and the decorations absolutely must come down on the 6th of January' sort of person, it would, in our view, be acceptable to keep using this throughout the year.

Lucy G is really bringing the festive enthusiasm and says hers is a blanket of sheer joy (!): "OH-MY-GOD THIS PRODUCT IS AN ITEM OF SHEER JOY!!!!! I bought it for my other half as a Christmas present but decided to give it to her early as it was a 'useful' present and I can honestly say it's been used constantly ever since! Even without the electric heating bit on (which is just DIVINE after a really chilly and wet dog walk) the blanket itself is really heavy and fab quality and can actually be used on it's own. The washing instructions are a bit confusing as it says it's fully washable on the website but when we got ours there are a lot of 'exceptions' and I think it says it can only be washed 5 times in its lifetime but you HAVE to buy this blanket. You will NOT regret it!"

Someone's been on the mulled wine...

#12. Silentnight Comfort Control

Cost: £35.00

We're pleased to see this Silentnight electric blanket on this list, not only because it's the one we started with, but because it is one of the most affordable electric blankets on the market.

From personal experience we can say that it's been totally life-changing. Sure, the easy fit horizontal straps sometimes struggle to keep the blanket in place underneath your top sheet and mattress protector (it starts to bunch up a little every now and then) but otherwise it heats up pretty quickly, and was in the right price bracket to be a fantastic entry-level purchase for anyone thinking of buying their first electric blanket.

Key info:

  • Super cosy: made from super snuggly fleece material to keep you extra warm and cosy

  • Ultra fast heat up: control your comfort with fast heat up and 3 heat settings

  • Sleep safe: features overheat protection for total peace of mind

  • Affordable comfort: costing from just 1p a night to run you can afford to keep your bed warm and cosy all night long

  • Easy fit straps: the new and improved easy fit straps provide an easy secure fit

  • Easy to keep clean: machine washable for clean cosiness week after week

Suemixalot asks herself whether she might be in love with hers: "We bought a single size electric blanket for our king size bed so that we could have to across the bottom of the bed. Oh my what a treat! As someone who suffers with ice cold feet this is amazing. Put it on 15 mins before bed and got into bed with a toasty warm pocket at the bottom. Hubby switched it off an hour or so later but it had sufficiently warmed me up for the eve. Well packaged, this is like a felt feet pad. The controls are super easy, with a sliding switch that has ‘OFF’ at each end, so if you reach down for the off switch in poor light you can’t get it wrong. Very happy so far. This will save me putting the heating on for a while longer.."

#13. Cosi Home Extra Large Heated Throw

Cost: £76.99

Key info:

  • Luxury micro fleece: this Cosi Home Heated throw is made with a warm and fluffy micro-fleece fabric, this double-sided and soft-touch electric heated throw is perfect for keeping you cosy on the sofa, settee or in bed and on both freezing cold winter nights and warmer summer days. Running cost as low as 3p per hour based on the latest UK energy tariff.

  • 9 hour timer + 9 heat settings: a 9-Hour programmable timer function with an automatic cut-off feature allows the throw to turn off after a desired period of time. Perfect for when you fall asleep or if you forget to unplug your heated blanket. 9 adjustable heat settings provide complete temperature control for unrivalled comfort, whatever the weather.

  • Extra large and warm: large enough for 2 adults, this 160x130cm heated throw blanket allows you and another person (or alone) to wrap yourselves up and stay warm, and is even large enough to cover your feet. Integrated heating elements woven into the soft-touch fabric deliver consistent consistent and efficient heat, perfect for relaxing or soothing aching muscles and joints.

  • Machine washable and durable: 100% machine washable, the remote control and cable are fully detachable, allowing this versatile heated throw to be washed over and over again, ensuring the fabric remains clean and fresh for many years.

  • Advanced safety features: an advanced overheat protection system, and fully CE compliant with UK & European regulations.

Cinnapom says that theirs changed their minds on the over or under blanket debate (if that's a thing): "At £65 I was sceptical at first, I usually use electric under-blankets but since having a little one I don’t use them on my bed. This has been a game changer as I can just throw it over my legs at night and it goes nowhere near my little one. Also it gets really really warm (hot even) which is amazing for cold nights and watching movies I can throw it around me over my shoulders."

#14. Degrees of Comfort Fuzzy Sherpa Heated Blanket

Cost: £225.87

This Degrees of Comfort Sherpa heated blanket is by far the priciest on this list, but hey - it'll still probably be cheaper than sticking the heating on, and it could help give your living room or bedroom that sense of style you've been looking for.

Given how many great electric throws and blankets are in the £60 price bracket, this does seem a little hefty at £225, and probably will be out of reach of most people's price range - there are some really nice throws out there at a fraction of the price. That being said, you get twenty (yes, TWENTY) heat settings to choose from, a soft, fuzzy sherpa finish on one side, and an even better silky mink weave on the other. It's probably unbeatable as electric throws go, and if you have the money - why not give it a go?!

Key info:

  • Two sided softness: choose between a thick, fuzzy sherpa finish or a more silky mink weave. Combine this comfort with heating capabilities and our heated blankets become a powerful relaxation tool

  • Adjustable auto shut off: never worry again about overheating or falling asleep with your heated throw still on. With a 1 to 10 hour adjustable timer this safety feature keeps you safe and gives you peace of mind so you can fully relax.

  • 20 heat settings: the steady heat dilates blood vessels and promotes blood flow. This helps to "open up" sore muscles and joints to relax them. Perfect for athletes looking to quicken recovery of those with physically demanding jobs.

  • Super simple to wash: just disconnect the controller and cables - stays silky after many washes.

  • 5 year warranty: no fading, pilling or shrinking guaranteed: built to last, even after hundreds of washes.

Michael Silverstein in the USA says it’s made his wife happier than he could ever dream to: "the item was received in record time. 3 days after ordering received - that night hooked up and that night my wife slept like a baby. Controls were easy to use and that makes her happy and me ecstatic."

(NB presumably he means he 'hooked up' his blanket to the power supply)

#15. Sienna Heated Wearable Sherpa Hoodie Blanket

Cost: £30.99

This is last on our list but definitely not least! It's a novel way to keep warm whether or not you choose to turn the heated pads on - so really, you're getting two for one with this heated wearable hoodie by Sienna.

We love the blush pink (although you can probably find other colours out there), and we can definitely imagine getting matching ones for the whole family to keep us nice and toasty through the winter.

Our only minor reservation is that they're not mains powered, so you could find yourself going through quite a few batteries if you use them a lot. That being said, if they were mains-powered, you'd need to stay in the same spot in the house...which isn't massively convenient. At only £30 each, it's a great way to combine wearables with staying warm so we'll leave it at that.

Key info:

  • Three heat panels: features three heat panels, one behind the large pocket to keep your hands and core warm, one on the lower back, and another across the shoulders to help keep your neck warm. The triple heat setting is controlled with a button for low, medium, and high heat. Just plug in a USB battery pack and hold button to turn on to get additional warmth for outdoors and indoors (NB the battery is not included)

  • Simple to use: operation/instruction manual included

  • Lovely blush pink: all complete with ivory Sherpa lining and colour matched cuffs and pockets.

  • Internal heating plates: for when you’d like extra heat

  • One Size Fits Most: 62" Waist, 36" Body, 25" Arms (including cuff).

  • Suitable for all sizes and ages: thanks to the oversized snuggle design. Ideal to use whilst camping, travelling, or just relaxing around the house. Can be used with or without the heat pack

  • Machine washable at 30℃. Flannel fleece outer, and soft Sherpa lining of the hood. The oversized features with additional heat pads makes this the perfect present for friends and family.

Benjamin Franklin (presumably not the former US President) says: "I am so happy with my purchase of the heated hooded top with soft lining. I was looking for something that would keep me warm without overheating and this is perfect. The heating elements are just enough to keep me warm without overdoing it. I love the soft lining and how it feels against my skin. It's also very comfortable to wear and doesn't feel too tight or restrictive."
