Are you fry-curious? Getting an air fryer was one of the best decisions I ever made. Join me.

If you’ve been avoiding all the hype about air fryers and how life changing they are, I don’t blame you. There’s nothing worse than being preached to by fanatical air fryer obsessives, going on about how much money they save you.
I for one am all about avoiding hype, which is why I still haven’t gotten round to watching any of the Harry Potter films yet.
So it rather took me by surprise when I found myself becoming fry-curious, browsing a particularly well known retailer’s website just to have a ‘quick look’.
Underpinning my curiosity at the time was that I had just watched an episode of Come Dine With Me where one of the contestants used an air fryer to roast a whole joint of beef, and that was just the right level of exposure I needed to tip me over into thinking that I might want to be part of the air fryer club.
Incidentally, that contestant didn’t win, but I did like the fact that you could do a whole chicken in it and it would only take twenty minutes or something.
In this article, we've summarised the pros and cons of air fryers, plus researched a list of the best 13 air fryers available on Amazon UK in 2022 (ranked by customer reviews).

What is an air fryer?
An air fryer is a small(ish) appliance that uses extremely hot air to cook food, which is cooked in a basket or tray inside the air fryer. They’re actually very similar to the whacking great convection ovens most of us have, just a lot smaller.
How does an air fryer work?
Air fryers work by circulating hot air around the food to cook it. This is generated by a heating element, and is blown around the food using a powerful fan (much stronger than a standard convection fan oven). Air frying is an extremely efficient way of cooking food quickly and evenly.
Benefits of air fryers
They’re super cheap to run. Katie McAuliffe, reporter for the Manchester Evening News, put the two appliances head to head to determine whether it really is cheaper to use an air fryer. The results were that air fryers cost 20p to use for 15 minutes, whereas a fan oven cost 42p to use for 41 minutes (11 minutes heating up, 30 minutes to cook). Ok, that doesn’t sound like a great saving at first, when you consider that a decent air fryer could set you back £200 or more - but those 20p savings will most certainly add up, especially as the cost of electricity is skyrocketing and many people are having to choose between eating and heating. Air fryers are much more energy-efficient than most convection ovens because they cook food much faster, though they do use electricity which is typically more expensive than gas.
They cook your food a lot faster. Typically an air fryer cooks food faster than a standard oven, because due to the size of the space, the hot air circulates more quickly around the food. This is another reason why it’s cheaper to operate, since you’re not paying to heat a much larger space like a normal oven. An average air fryer takes about three minutes to reach 200°C. The circulating heat is similar to hot steam. Unfortunately, our poor old oven could never reach that temperature even after five minutes - it can take up to fifteen minutes to get that hot.
They’re much healthier. Thanks to the high heat and blasting technique, food gets cooked from the inside out. You do not have to marinate it before cooking and neither do you need a lot of oil for a crisp fry. Some oven recipes require food to be marinated and a big glug of oil added. However, in our trusty air fryer none of that is needed - although I do add a few pumps of a sunflower oil spray to food before giving it a blast in the air fryer.
Ok, so what’s not to love about air fryers?
There are a couple of potential downsides to getting an air fryer.
First off, they can take up quite a bit of room in your kitchen, so if you live in a shoebox then you might struggle finding somewhere to put it.
We also find that when in use, our air fryer pumps out a lot of extremely hot moisture from the back, which scientifically is an obvious and necessary part of its existence. So you just need to make sure that it’s not damaging anything behind, or above (our kitchen units are really cheap and the laminate started peeling off a bit before we realised).
Whilst for one or two people, an air fryer is well proportioned (depending on which size / capacity you go for), if you wanted to do enough food for a family of four, you might need to do things in batches, as space is limited (although the size means it’s cheaper to run). When I cook a Sunday roast, the air fryer and normal oven work really together because I always have just a bit too much to do in just one of them.
Finally, you do need to regularly attend to your food in the air fryer to turn it and generally make sure that it’s not getting annihilated. Our air fryer is so powerful that the simple act of roasting some broccoli has more than once turned our dinner into something resembling post-apocalyptic bracken, because we forgot to check on it.
That’s not dissimilar to any other method of cooking though, you’ll always need to give your food a turn or a stir however you’re cooking it - you don't have to be Gordon Ramsay to know that.

#2: Ninja Air Fryer Max, 5.2 Litres
Cost: £207.90
Made also by Ninja, the masters of air fryers, this Air Fryer Max only comes with one cooking zone - so you do have to do everything in one basket - but is the second best rated air fryer on Amazon UK.
Key info:
Guilt-free fried food using little to no oil
Cooks up to 50% faster than fan ovens* (*Tested against fish fingers and sausages.)
6 cooking functions - Max Crisp, Air Fry, Roast, Bake, Reheat & Dehydrate
Air Fry – Up to 75% less fat than traditional frying methods** (**Tested against hand-cut deep fried French fries)
Dishwasher-safe parts. Includes family-sized 5.2L non-stick basket
One reviewer, G Shawx, had this to say: "This easily comes under the heading of 'why on earth didn't I buy one of these sooner?'. Very easy to use and even easier to clean. I'd stopped cooking fried foodstuffs such as sausages and burgers mainly because i was tired of having to clean the fat off everything afterwards. With the air fryer it couldn't be simpler, everything cooked to perfection with little or no mess (and even better, no need for oil whatsoever!)."
#3: Ninja Foodi Max Health Grill and Air Fryer, 3.8L
Cost: £199.00
This isn't us just being completely obsessed with Ninja, we're just doing this list in the order of best-reviewed air fryers by Amazon customers. Coming in with a mighty 4.8 out of 5 is this slightly different take on an air fryer, which is a smaller 3.8L version that both grills and air fries - and comes with a 'leave-in digital cooking probe' so you know when your food is perfectly cooked.
Key info:
The large capacity grill that precisely cooks with perfect results
More than a grill – 6 cooking functions: Air Fry, Bake, Roast, Reheat, Dehydrate and Grill
Smart Cook System – Leave-in Digital Cooking Probe lets you know when your food is perfectly cooked, exactly as you like it
Air Fry guilt-free fried food – Up to 75% less fat than traditional frying methods*
Includes 3.8L Cooking Pot, 3.8L Crisper Basket, 740cm2 Grill Plate, Cleaning Brush, Chef-Created Recipe Guide. Dishwasher-safe parts
Amazon customer Jake had this to say about the Ninja Foodi Max Health Grill and Air Fryer: "Completely cut stuff like steak slices and sausage rolls out of my diet, would often grab one on the way back from work just so I can have something quick and easy, but everything is pretty quick and easy in this thing. Huge money save when you add up those few pounds every day."
#4: Ultrean Air Fryer, 4L
Cost: £110.64
Until putting this list together, I'd never heard of Ultrean before - but if it's ranked at number 4 on the Amazon customer reviews, then it must be pretty good.
What we love about this one is its cute, almost retro design. Most air fryers on here look like they've been designed by men - black, shiny things - so it's nice to see some playful colour and sleek curves which will bring some life to the corner of your kitchen. Plus, it's on the affordable side at just over £100.
Key stats:
Enjoy Food with Less Fat or Oil - with Ultrean air fryer you can enjoy the same fried and crispy foods with less fat and grease
Get a multifunction cooker that saves your time and money - aside from air frying you can also grill, roast and bake your favourite food with its innovative heating system rapid air technology which is designed to cook your food evenly without the hassles of using hot oil or thermometer
Hassle-free operation - with accessible buttons and easy cooking set up; It comes with an auto switch off timer (0-30mins) and adjustable temperature setting
Easy to clean. It has a non stick pan, heat-resistant handle and a detachable dishwasher safe basket, so it's easy to cook and clean the unit after cooking
Contemporary design with LCD display and a bonus recipe book to help you prepare your fried food, snacks, grilled and baked foods!
Don't just take our word for it - here's Canadian reviewer Darre: "I have had this air fryer for a couple weeks and it is absolutely amazing. I'm obsessed with it! I use it almost everyday and it's easy to use and make chicken breasts taste so much better. Highly recommend."
#5: Instant Vortex 4-in-1 Air Fryer Oven Combo, 2L
Cost: £89.59
Again, not a brand we'd heard of, but at a very respectable 5th on this list (especially when Ninja have monopolised the top spots) is the Instant Vortex, which comes with its very own app.
This little air fryer will sit nicely and compactly in your kitchen without taking up too much room, and is a nice, modern white. However, it's strength is also its weakness, as with only a two litre capacity, you'll only be able to do small batches at any one time. If you're not trying to feed a family, this might be a great option, and comes in at under £100.
Key stats:
4-in-1 functionality: Air fry, broil, roast and reheating.
One-touch smart programmes: Customisable cooking programs for easy chicken wings, roasted veggies, cinnamon buns and more.
Evencrisp technology: Delivering all the crunch and tenderness of deep-frying with 95% less oil.
Easy to clean basket: Non-stick air fry basket holds enough food for a small family.
Fast preheating: Little to no preheating time.
Adjustable temperature: Easily select temperatures from 95 to 400° F.
Compact design: Countertop-friendly size fits any kitchen and is great for side dishes and appetisers.
Proven safety features: Built-in safety features including Overheat Protection and auto-off.
Loads of great recipes: Download their free Instant Pot app (iOS and Android) so you can discover new favourites and prepare delicious meals.
This Amazon customer was absolutely delighted with theirs: "Literally the best air fryer I have ever used. Has an air fry and a bake option (I’ve used the bake more because I don’t have an oven where I’m currently staying) …. It cooks stuff SO FAST. I make chicken, vegetables, fries, salmon. Everything comes out perfect and crispy. I have never been more happy with a kitchen appliance. 12/10 stars if I could."
#6: Dreo Air Fryer, 3.8L
Cost: £67.99
We're familiar with their great little electric floor heaters, so we were pleased to find out that Dreo also make air fryers, and even more so that they are aimed at this price bracket. After all, you don't always have the cash to splash on a top of the range Ninja Foodi.
It's not huge, but it's also not tiny, and at just shy of £70, you certainly get a lot for your money. Had we not had a bunch of Christmas vouchers to spend at that certain UK retailer, we probably would have gone for something like this - plus with this link, you get a free recipe book!
Key info:
40℃-200℃ Wide Temperature Range: Industry-leading temperature range allows you to make various foods - anything from crispy chicken to delicious cakes. Max 200℃ can cook 30% faster and brown wings more easily. 40℃ is the ideal temperature to make yogurt.
Compact Design: Space-saving body takes up less room and fits perfectly in small cooking areas. 3.8L capacity is spacious to cook food for you and your sweetheart at once.
Less to No Oil: Dreo digital air fryer cooks food through rapid 360° air circulation and provides evener, crispier results, with 95% less oil than traditional deep frying, allowing you to enjoy guilt-free foods with less fat.
Powerful 9 Functions: One touch preheat and 8 presets help you unfreeze, bake, cook, crisp, dehydrate and quickly reheat food. Use the default settings or change the time and temperature to customise your own cooking process.
50 Healthy Recipes: Included recipe book curated by Do culinary chefs offers step-by-step instructions for each meal and a quick guide for cooking frozen food. You'll never run out of ideas on what to cook.
Very happy Amazon reviewer S. J. Asphar said this about theirs: "Very happy with the air fryer - most importantly it’s very quiet & doesn’t take up much worktop space - works brilliantly. So quick & easy compared to using the oven. Ok I’m not a fan of the shiny black plastic but was brilliant value & has all the features of more expensive models - exceeded expectations so far!"
#7: Cosori XXL Air fryer, 5.5L
Cost: £109.99
COSORI is a brand that we've been hearing a lot about in the air fryer world (yes, air fryer communities actually exist on Facebook - we're part of the Ninja Foodi Facebook group?!)
At a very reasonable price, and with a whopping 75,000 reviews, the XXL air fryer is big enough to cook for a family (as long as you don't eat absurdly big portions like us), and its A+++ energy class means it's one of the most efficient air fryers out there.
This particular model also comes in a SMART version, where for only a fraction more money you can remotely control your fryer through the free VeSync app. You could be sitting on the bus home and simultaneously be controlling your air fryer. Cool.

Pamela Clewley said this about her Amazon purchase: "I am very happy with this air fryer and have used it many times in the past couple of weeks since it arrived. It has been great for small roasts and also last weekend I roasted a 1.5 kg chicken in it plus small roast potatoes which have all turned out really well."
Thanks Pam!
#8: COSORI Air Fryer, 4.7L
Cost: £109.99
You wait for one COSORI air fryer, and two turn up at once! Whilst it's not quite a large as it's big brother, this version utilises the same touch screen technology and comes in a slightly more attractive matte grey finish - its smaller size also means that it'll fit nicely into your kitchen.
It's the same price as the larger version, so really your choice comes down to which one you think looks nicest, and fits best into your space.
Key info:
Save Up to 55% on Energy Bills: Faster cooking time, consuming less electricity
Too large or too small, that's a question. But not for CAF-L501. The compact 4.7-litre design is suitable for yourself or your family (Ideal for 4 people or for cooking 1.5-1.8kg chicken)

Cleaning Becomes Simple: The removable non-stick coated basket can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher
This Amazon customer loves theirs: "This is my first air fryer and I am impressed. I chose this model as it needs to fit a storage shelf which has a depth of 32cm. This unit fits nicely and, as it is not too heavy, it is easy to pop it out and onto our work surface for a cooking session. In short - we love it!"
#9: Secura Air Fryer, 5L
Cost: £149.99
Do we love the design of this Secura Air Fryer? Not really. But with reviews into the thousands, and coming in at number 9 of the most popular air fryers on Amazon UK, this one certainly deserves to be on the list.
It comes with all the usual features you'd want to see from a decent air fryer, and at 5 litre capacity, you should be able to get a fair amount of roasting done in it. A good mid-range air fryer, scoring 4.7 out of 5.
Key info:
Healthy and flavourful cooking for your whole family: 1700W Power Air Fryer basket holds up to 5 litres which makes it one of the largest fryers on the market.
All-in-one convenience cooker: use it daily to fry, roast, bake, reheat or grill - it does it all and heats up in 3 minutes.
Faster, more energy efficient and less mess: convection technology uses rapidly circulating heated air for fast and even frying with little to no oil.

One of over 4,000 Amazon product reviewers, Dfer rated it: "After doing a bit of research on air fryers I stumbled upon this one which didn’t come up in my original Amazon search. But what a find! It’s excellent."
#10: COSORI Smart Air Fryer Oven, 6.4L
Cost: £179.99
Another really energy efficient air fryer in UK is the third on this list from COSORI, which also happens to be the largest of theirs at a whopping 6.4L. This really will be suitable for families and larger gatherings, so if you do a lot of cooking for upwards of 3-4 people at a time, you should be looking at something of this size.
For the price, you get a design that looks great and certainly matches anything by Ninja, and the added bonus of SMART technology so that you can remotely control your air fryer. If you're looking for an air fryer under the £200 price barrier, this one should definitely be on your list.

Jeremy Lingard, who bought this model on Amazon, loves his: "I love this piece of equipment! I bought it for my wife to make life easier and to save money. However I had first to work out how to use it, and look up some recipes. This was a grave error of judgement, as it led to me becoming the main cook. But the weird thing is, I thoroughly enjoy using it. It’s so easy, the results are so good – I love everything about it."
It sounds like you might need to tell your wife how you feel about your air fryer, Jeremy.
#11: Instant Pot Vortex 4-in-1 Air Fryer 5.7L
Cost: £99.99
The Instant Pot Vortex looks like a nifty little air fryer model, and whilst you get a more limited range of programmes compared to the more expensive air fryers, perhaps that isn't too much of an issue. Having used the Ninja Foodi Dual Max for a while, I can confidently say that I only ever really use three functions - Max Crisp, Roast and Air Fry - so getting an all-singing, all-dancing model maybe isn't always worth it unless you plan on taking that baby for a ride.
At 5.7L, the Instant Pot Vortex is certainly big enough to get most of your roasting done even if you're cooking for a few hungry mouths - and most importantly, it's only a penny short of £100 so it's fairly affordable.
Key info:
Crisp to perfection using 95% less oil: create healthy versions of your favourite foods. The Vortex air fryer achieves that perfectly crisp fried texture and flavour, without the fat.
Space saving and versatile: 4 pre-set programmes in 1 appliance. AIR FRY the crispiest chips, BAKE delicious cakes and pastries, ROAST chicken, meats or veg, REHEAT Pizza – and much more.
Total control: smart dial control to easily adjust temperature up to 205°C and cooking time up to 1 hour.
Large capacity: generous 5.7L capacity fits a 1.8kg chicken of 1kg of fries! Cook from fresh or frozen, healthy convenience at its best!
No mess: Minimal grease means minimal mess. The air fryer basket contains the splatter and its sleek surfaces wipe clean quickly. Plus, the cooking tray is removable and dishwasher safe.
Amazon customer J M said this about their Vortex air fryer: "I'm absolutely delighted with this air fryer. I looks up loads of different brands but went for this one on the recommendation of a friend who has the same one. Very simple to use, quieter than I was expecting and looks great. I used to have an Actifry a few years ago but the food sometimes got stuck when it turned but this fits so much more and cooks very quickly. I hate cleaning the oven which makes this even better as very easy to clean. I've only used airfryer and roast [functions] so far but VERY impressed."
#12: Tefal EasyFry Precision 2in1 Digital Air Fryer & Grill, 4.2L
Cost: £114.00
We probably expected something from Tefal, arguably a giant in the world of cooking appliances, to rank in the top 10 of Amazon customer-reviewed air fryers, but at a still-respectable 12th, the EasyFry Precision seems to hit the sweet spot between affordability and functionality.
Tefal claims that you can whip up a feast in this 4.2L capacity air fryer, which is large enough to hold up to 1.2kg of food, making cooking for up to 6 people 'a breeze'. Is it ideal for family dinners and entertaining friends? Maybe. But it's certainly not the biggest model out there, so if you do cook a lot for larger groups, this might be a little on the small side. However it does come with a juicy number of pre-set modes if you can't be bothered to really think about what you're cooking.
And, for meal inspiration you get access to the free Tefal app, which has hundreds of free air fryer recipes.
Key info:
2 ways to cook: Get creative in the kitchen with EasyFry 2-in-1 Classic - Tefal's first digital air fryer and grill in one. Enjoy irresistibly crispy dishes. Or grill like a pro with the unique Sizzling Grill Plate for those authentic grill marks.
Save up to 80% energy & cook 49% faster:Â Get that crispy crunch and taste you love in almost half the amount of time. Prepare a wide variety of meals 49% faster than a conventional oven whilst saving up to 80% energy.
Versatility is everything: 8 pre-set modes to help you perfect your meals: Fries, Nuggets, Roasted Chicken, Pizza, Meat, Fish, Vegetables, Dessert. You can also a dehydrate function to make dried fruit snacks.
Intuitive use: Easy to use digital touchscreen controls. Simply press to choose a preset program. Or set your own time (<60mins) and temperature (80-200°C) for precision cooking. This air fryer also turns itself off and beeps when your food is ready.
Download the App: With hundreds of recipes on the free Tefal app, plus access to a hand-picked selection of seasonal recipes and tips you'll never run out of meal ideas.
With a name which sounds like it's been AI-generated by the 28th season of Championship Manager 1995, M D Lickfold loves their Tefal EasyFry:
"Very user friendly, with preset or manual digital controls. Big enough to cook an entire roast dinner for 4! Including the joint of meat, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and cauliflower cheese. Small enough to cook fewer items such as sausages or poultry items. I would strongly recommend this air fryer. It’s going to save a fortune in electricity consumption. I haven’t needed to use our oven since purchasing this item. Oh….. it makes fantastic chips too! Homemade or frozen!"
#13: Philips Essential Air Fryer, 4.1L
Cost: £149.99
If you can't beat them...get your product ranked as #1 in the Deep Fryer section instead!
The domestic appliance giant Philips has snuck onto the final slot of this list, at number 13 of Amazon customer favourites, with its Essential Air Fryer. It's got a nice digital display and touch screen, and looks pretty sleek. Not our favourite design, because it looks a little plasticky, but certainly not one we dislike either.
With a price tag of around £150, there are of course cheaper and potentially better value air fryers out there, but with the Philips name behind this one, many of us will prefer the familiarity of using a trusted brand.
Like many of the top rated air fryers in the UK, this comes with an app with loads of recipes you can take inspiration from, so you don't get caught in the trap of making the same handful of dishes over and over again. It does also come in a larger 6.2L version if you need the extra cooking capacity.
Key info:
Healthy frying with Rapid Air technology - fry with up to 90% less fat
Open up a world of possibilities: fry, bake, grill, roast and even reheat
Touch screen with 7 preset programs, which include frozen snacks, fries, meat, fish, chicken drumsticks, cake and even grilled vegetables
Keep warm function, which keeps your food at the ideal temperature for up to 30 minutes
Delicious Airfryer recipes for healthy living every day via NutriU App
Daily inspiration for new recipes based on your preferences
Craig Dawkins is a big fan of his: "I’d read lots of information stating how much healthier, tastier and cheaper it was to air fry but was struggling to justify the initial outlay. The price and reviews for this Philips Essential Airfryer finally persuaded me to take the plunge and I couldn’t be happier. Everything I’ve cooked so far has been crisp, juicy and tasty and cooked far more healthily and economically than the oven or deep fat fryer! It’s also sooooo easy to clean. A quick wipe and it’s done!"
