Best Dehumidifiers in the UK 2022

Writer's picture: Christopher WhiteChristopher White

Tired of feeling like you've gone to bed in a wet towel? Get yourself a dehumidifier.

If only the owner of this house had used a dehumidifier

On this blog, we've already been singing the praises of air fryers, heated throws and electric blankets, and how to stay warm and save money this winter. So naturally, finding the best dehumidifiers was next in our sights.

Whilst an electric blanket can help with alleviating the thrill of getting into an ice cold bed, what about combatting mould around the house? Or that feeling of the bedsheets being slightly damp to the touch?

Why get a dehumidifier?

Living in a basement flat, we rely on our dehumidifier to help keep our bedroom free of mould - which can cause all sorts of health issues if it's left unchecked.

Research by USwitch has revealed that almost two thirds (62%) of people claim to have had an issue with mould in their home at least once, with conditions in the home the most common reason for the spread of mould.

Over a quarter of mould victims agreed that mould had affected their health in some way. While being around mould may cause minor illnesses like a runny nose or coughing, for those with asthma, mould allergies, and weakened immune systems, it can trigger a much stronger reaction.

In the USwitch Mouldy Nation survey, 9% of respondents shockingly believe that the mould in their home led to them having an asthma attack and 10% of people believe that it compromised their immune system. But aside from the physical issues people have encountered due to their mouldy homes, mental health has also been affected with 13% of people stating that it’s made them depressed.

Recently, the BBC reported on the case of Awaab Ishak, a toddler who died from a respiratory condition caused by exposure to mould in his home.

So it's vital to try and keep your property well ventilated, or get a dehumidifier - to avoid physically and mental health issues.

What is a dehumidifier?

A dehumidifier is usually a portable appliance which removes moisture from the air, helping prevent mould. They usually work by drawing air in, then filtering and cooling it to condense moisture. It's then reheated before warmer and dryer air is released. The great thing about that functionality is that it not only removes dampness, but also pumps warm air out - so there's less need to put the heating on, thereby saving you money.

It's really worth getting one if you've got damp problems. Usually, cheaper models (under £100) have fewer features, a smaller tank capacity and may not be as efficient at water removal. Mid-range (£100-£250) and high end (over £250) models typically have a better water removal capability, higher energy efficiency, more features and a larger tank capacity. That said, they'll usually be larger, heavier, sometimes noisier - and of course, sometimes completely unaffordable!
